Royal MacNab – Hunting Event
DATE NOT CONFIRMED
“The great hunt starts on Saturday morning at 6:00”
To complete the MacNab, the participant has to shoot a Mountain Reedbuck and Greywing Francolin and catch a Trout (in any order) within 12 hours.
The hunter needs a Shotgun, Trout Fishing Rod and a Hunting Rifle with the necessary ammunition and flies. The most suitable flies for catching Trout are Zaknymphs nr. 14 or 16 and Haresear Mynphs nrs 12, 14 of 16. Dogs may not be used to hunt the birds.
On the Friday afternoon there is a compulsory adjusting of rifles after which the hunters are given the opportunity to shoot Guinea fowl. For safety reasons, nr. 5 shot (or smaller) must be used for the Guinea fowl shoot.
During the Steak evening on the Friday, each hunter draws a guide from a hat. The guide knows the area very well and is there to assist the hunter and tag the buck. The hunter must decide and arrange with the guide in advance what to be done with the buck and the horns. Cooling and slaughtering facilities are available and must be arranged. Capes can also be arranged. Gun safe facilities can be arranged with the guide, guesthouse, or hotel owner.
The Royal MacNab club provides the Hunting Licence, Permit for the removal of the meat, First Aid kit and Cool bags with delicious eats for the day. Extra people who wish to go on the hunt can arrange for Cool bags at an additional cost and they must sign an indemnity form.
The great hunt starts on the Saturday morning at 06:00 and ends at the Country Club at 18:00 where the horns are measured and the fish weighed to determine the winner. The game is placed on exhibit for all to view. Various prizes are handed out and the name of every hunter who completes the McNab is engraved on a wall plaque in the Country Club. A bonfire is lit and the hunters gather to talk about their hunting experience.
