Make it happen…
This lesser known route will reward you with magnificent, ever changing topography and scenery as it winds through farmland, mountains and valleys, over bridges and onto plateaus. Vegetation consists mainly of grassland with patches of poplar and willow trees. The route allows for a more relaxed riding experience which gives you the opportunity to enjoy the views.
ROUTE 3: IN THE CLOUDS
Duration: 1 Day
Starts and ends in Lady Grey (4X4 style, high, sky & snow slopes)
Distance: 280 km
Level of Difficulty: 4/5
This route takes you through a farming valley and scenery that will leave you in awe. Reminiscent of Scotland, British Settlers chose this mountainous area for farming. However, it is as challenging as it is beautiful. It includes the toughest, highest mountain passes in South Africa with a gradient of up to 1:5, a maximum summit of 3 001 m and a 360° view of mountains, valleys, rivers, deep into Lesotho up to the ends of the earth… Any weather conditions, including strong wind, heavy rain, hail and snow, can be expected at this altitude so be prepared.
ROUTE 4: BORDERLINE
Duration: 1 Day
Starts and ends in Lady Grey ( hidden dam and the Lesotho border with a valley twist)
Distance: 272 km
Level of Difficulty: 4/5
This interesting route is one you would not forget. It takes you along an underrated gravel mountain pass which is technically longer, bigger and more challenging than most of the other highly rated mountain passes in the area. The summit is at 2162 m and it has many bends, corners, curves and even a few hairpins. There are some steep sections and you would need to cross unbridged streams at places. During the journey you would see the Lesotho border, visit a secret dam and ride through a valley with scenery that is second to none.
ROUTE 5: BOTTLE IT UP
Duration: 1 Day
Starts and ends in Lady Grey (easy flowing mountains)
Distance: 275 km
Level of Difficulty: 3/5
This route always offers great scenery and an enjoyable ride but it is most spectacular during autumn when the Poplar leaves change colour. It winds along an easy flowing road in the mountains, taking you to a remote part of the Eastern Cape Highlands in the vicinity of Elliot. The most challenging is a steep gravel mountain pass (1:5) of which the summit is at 2204 m. Views include a pristine river which is ideal for fly-fishing. The river banks are intermittently lined with Poplar groves, occasional Willows and Pastures.
